How can I get to see a PNTL ship?

PNTL holds open days at the ships each summer at the ships' home port of Barrow in the north west of England. Special tours may also be arranged for groups of visitors to see the Pacific Sandpiper when she is in Barrow. Ship visits and tours in other countries are arranged subject to the availability of the vessel. For more information, contact

Why aren't all ships built to PNTL's high standards?

The PNTL ships are designed to provide a safe and reliable shipping service for movements of spent fuel, vitrified waste, mixed oxide (MOX) fuel and other nuclear materials. Because small volumes of nuclear materials generate relatively large amounts of energy (compared to oil, coal and gas), the PNTL ships carrying them do not have to be big. This also means that the economics of the shipments are not adversely affected by the wide double hulls that amount to forty per cent of the beam (width) of the ship. For shipments of other materials, cargo room is at a premium. Ship Tour »

What is the purpose of the double hulls on the PNTL ships?

The double hulls on PNTL vessels are designed to help the ship survive a collision whereas double hulls on other ships such as oil tankers are primarily designed to minimize pollution.

Who can I speak to about using PNTL to ship material for my organization?

PNTL only ships nuclear material and does not ship any other types of goods. PNTL can be contacted at info@pntl.co.uk or by using our Online Enquiry Form

How can I apply for a job at PNTL?

PNTL recruitment is managed by James Fisher and Sons. The James Fisher and Sons website contains contact information for job applicants.
