The cargo compartments of the PNTL fleet are protected by a double hull configuration, extending to twenty per cent of the beam on both sides of each ship. In addition, the hulls are reinforced with 400 tonnes of extra steel to withstand collision damage.

PNTL in the Community

PNTL's operations are regularly reviewed and discussed at meetings of the Ramsden Dock Terminal Stakeholders Group (RDTSG) in Barrow, Cumbria.  The RDTSG acts as a channel of information and comment between PNTL and the community.

The members of this group have agreed that the minutes of its meetings should be made publicly available through the PNTL website.

Topics covered in the January 2009 meeting include:

  • Ship Construction Update
  • Operations Review
  • Emergency Response
  • Terminal Review
  • Environment, Health & Safety Review

PNTL Safety In Depth

The pioneering safety design of PNTL vessels has set the standard for international regulations established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Additional barriers have been engineered to separate the outside environment from the nuclear cargo being transported by PNTL.

The full "Safety in Depth" system encompasses the material itself, canisters, assemblies, special packages called "casks" or "flasks" and the protection provided by the reinforced double hulls of the PNTL fleet.

PNTL goes extra mile with Pacific Heron

How do you improve on excellence? This was the question facing PNTL and International Nuclear Services as they began to contemplate a new ship design to replace the first generation of nuclear carriers that had safely transported spent fuel, vitrified waste, mixed oxide fuel and plutonium across the world since 1979.

When the Pacific Heron left Tamano, Japan on her maiden voyage in April 2008 the answer was revealed.
